In the early 1600’s slavery started in the English colonies. Slave ships started to bring slaves from
Africa over to North
America to be sold. This was the beginning of the slave trade. When slavery was first introduced to Canada in 1689, Canadians would not refer to a slave
as a “slave”, they would refer to them as a servant.
